The Disability Network in Michigan is a coalition of local, non-profit Centers for Independent Living. Their mission is to assure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for people with disabilities. They serve people with disabilities of all ages, with all types of physical, cognitive, sensory, and mental health disability characteristics, who are living in their own homes, supported living arrangements, or institutional settings.

Core Services Include:
  • Information and Assistance including the resources needed to make informed choices about living, learning, and working independently
  • Independent Living Skills to teach everyday self-sufficiency, including budgeting, healthy diet, housing, transportation, personal assistance, employment, and strategies for self-advocacy
  • Peer Counseling between two or more individuals with disabilities who share ideas in order to gain greater awareness and control over their own lives
  • Individual Advocacy for access to equal opportunities in social, economic, educational, and legal forums
  • Systems Advocacy to identify local, state, and national issues of importance to all people with disabilities, and to promote full inclusion and improved implementation of existing laws

    • From nursing facilities to home
  • Ongoing community support
  • Acquiring and maintaining appropriate benefits
  • Short-term personal counseling to set independent living goals
  • Securing, learning to use, and maintaining assistive technology
  • Voter registration
  • Developing "Plans to Achieve Self-Support" for recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance
